Former Tennessee Vols quarterback Hendon Hooker had a solid showing for the Detroit Lions on Thursday night in his NFL preseason debut.

Hooker, who was playing in a game for the first time since he tore his ACL against the South Carolina Gamecocks in late 2022, completed five-of-nine passes for 36 yards. He also rushed for 34 yards on four carries -- including an impressive run where he trucked a New York Giants linebacker.

Unfortunately for Hooker, he suffered an injury against the Giants that prevented the former Vol from seeing more action on Thursday night.

Lions head coach Dan Campbell confirmed after the game that Hooker is in the concussion protocol.

Campbell told reporters after the game that he thought Hooker made some good decisions before the injury while also hinting that the former SEC offensive player of the year should probably be a little more cautious about running.

"That's what happens when you run in this league at the quarterback position," said Campbell. "He was moving the football. I thought he was making some solid decisions before that. A lot of those were the runs. So, he made it happen with his legs."

Hooker will hope to get back on the field as soon as he clears the concussion protocol. But even if he misses some time, he may have done enough on Thursday night to win the backup quarterback job in Detroit over Nate Sudfeld (who didn't look good at all against the Giants).
