There are two types of college football fans out there: Those who are extremely excited to see Ohio State freshman five-star wide receiver Jeremiah Smith play this fall, and those who pretend like they aren’t excited to see Smith play in 2024. The young man is must-see TV, creating unreal buzz this preseason.

On Friday, Smith was available for media availability. A big topic of conversation settled around his starting quarterback Will Howard . The conversation took an interesting turn when asked about the 6-4, 237-pound signal caller.

There were cliches that were given, like you would usually expect. You would expect a wide receiver to be complimentary of his quarterback from a confidence perspective, leadership, and ability to control the offense. There has, however, been a different side of Howard that has come out in Fall camp.

“He definitely made a big jump from the Spring,” Smith said about Howard. “I like his confidence. He’s starting to talk more, talk a lot of mess on the field. I love quarterbacks who love to talk, just get around their players, and make them feel good about themselves.

“He talks a lot on the field,” Smith continued. “He says a lot of stuff that I can’t say but he is going to talk for sure.”

Howard, a former Kansas State transfer, is a pretty impressive talent physically. He has a huge frame, pretty strong arm, and is an extremely talented athlete. Howard has also been commended for his leadership during his time with the Wildcats.

The part that you wouldn’t associate with Howard, right or wrong, is a trash talker. That may indicate that the senior signal caller is playing and carrying himself with some swagger right now, which the Buckeyes need at the position.

Howard heads into his final season in 2024 with 34 games played under his belt. During his time with the Wildcats, he threw for 5,786 yards and 48 touchdowns. Howard also rushed for another 921 yards and 19 touchdowns in his career. Ohio State is expected his most productive season yet in 2024.
