The Cleveland Browns very well could have been involved in a major NFL trade that landed them one of the best wide receivers in the league . In fact, the Browns reportedly had a trade package in place to acquire wide receiver Brandon Aiyuk from the San Francisco 49ers.

According to Matt Maiocco of NBC Sports , the Browns were prepared to send wide receiver Amari Cooper combined with second and fifth-round picks. The deal has obviously not come to fruition and it is reportedly because Aiyuk does not want to land in Cleveland.

“Aiyuk has publicly expressed a desire to play for the Steelers. And as much as they might want Aiyuk, they have been unwilling to provide the 49ers with their asking price of draft picks that include second- and third-round selections, according to a source.” - Matt Maiocco, NBC Sports

If the Steelers are not coughing up what the 49ers want for Aiyuk , then it appears that the All-Pro will be staying out west. After all, he is under contract and a deal on an extension is still possible between the 49ers and that news broke today.

The Browns being willing to give up a second-round pick as well as a fifth and Cooper is a steep price and comes shortly after Cleveland reworked the contract of Cooper. Cleveland paid out much of Cooper’s $20 million that is guaranteed via a signing bonus, so moving him would force the Browns to take on a large chunk of dead money.

Cleveland has shown over the years that they are not afraid to be aggressive and take the big swing. They did it to land quarterback Deshaun Watson and it was a big swing, even if it has not worked out to this point. The Browns look all but officially out on Aiyuk and it is not due to a lack of trying.
