Jayden Daniels and the Commanders offense immediately get their revenge against the Jets defense

Thursday's joint practice between the Washington Commanders and New York Jets was a rough one, in all phases.

The weather, plus key injuries, played big roles. Jayden Daniels and the Commanders offense couldn't move the ball, the secondary gave up big plays, and the kickers weren't making their kicks.

Therefore, people were wondering how Dan Quinn's squad, especially Daniels and co., would respond when the two teams kicked off on Saturday.

Well, it didn't take long for Daniels and the Commanders offense to make a statement. Not only did the unit go on a 11-play, 70-yard scoring drive that took 6:21 off the clock. Daniels was responsible for a highlight-reel play to Dyami Brown and scored the touchdown. The best part about both plays, is the fact they came on third down.

Daniels' throw to Brown was a great throw, but an even better catch by Brown and it showcased what the Commanders have seen from Daniels throughout camp when it comes to his deep ball prowess. And, in ironic fashion, the two connected for a very similar play on Thursday during the aforementioned joint practice.

Brian Robinson proceeded to carry the Commanders offense into the red zone with a couple of physical runs. The offensive line also opened some nice holes on the opening drive and held their own, for the most part, in pass protection. It was a nice showing, considering the fact that Brandon Coleman, Andrew Wylie, and Cornelius Lucas did not play in the game.

The Commanders continued to lean on the run game outside a quick screen pass to Terry McLaurin, which eventually set up a 3rd and 3 from the NYJ 5. This time, it was a physical run by Austin Ekeler that moved the chains thanks to a strong second effort. The run game finally hit a wall on the subsequent 1st and goal from the NYJ 3 and then things got a little worrisome when a false start on Nick Allegretti pushed the ball back to the NYJ 8.

Ekeler was able to get the ball back to the original line of scrimmage on the next play and then it was all Daniels on a perfectly-called zone read that led to the Commanders' first touchdown of the 2024 season and the first of Daniels' career.

In all, it was a very impressive showing. Not only by Daniels, but the Commanders offense, as a whole. Even the playcalling was strong, which is always a malleable subject during the preseason. It was cool to see the Commanders come out in 10 personnel on that 3rd and 6 that led to the 42-yard completion to Brown, because it shows that the Commanders know that they can really spread a defense out and let Daniels use his legs, if needed, to get the necessary yards. Daniels was wisely done for the day after the drive.

It's still the preseason, obviously, and there is a very long way to go. But this is as good a start that you could want for the rookie QB.
