Notre Dame has heavily invested in the football program this offseason. That included continuing to bolster one of the top coaching staffs in college football, luring offensive coordinator Mike Denbrock away from the LSU program, as well as making defensive coordinator Al Golden one of the highest paid coordinators in the country, and giving a pay raise to Mike Mickens as he was elevated to coach the full secondary.

Some of the other, and incredibly underrated moves around the program, came in the recruiting and support staff. The program was able to keep Chad Bowden as general manager, elevate Zaire Turner to Director of Player Personnel, keep Carter Auman in the recruiting staff, as well as the return of Caleb Davis. The behind the scenes operation made another interesting hire on Saturday.

It was announced by John Brice of FootballScoop that the Irish staff is adding Anthony Treash, who was formerly of Pro Football Focus. Treash will be added to the football department as Notre Dame’s Director of Analytics.

Treash, who was a graduate of Indiana University, has spent the last five years at PFF. His most recent role was as a College Football analyst.

The Notre Dame staff under Marcus Freeman has been very pro on the side of analytics, and it continues with this most recent hire. Treash will be working closely with Chad Bowden and Director of Scouting Matt Jansen to create a more efficient product on and off the field.

Pro Football Focus has gained national notoriety for their deep data collection, and football analysis over the years. There has been a lot of turnover for their company recently, with several prominent fixtures leaving for new ventures. Treash now goes into the college football world, where it is unknown for just what he can bring to the table.

This move is an interesting one, with no way of knowing for what the long term gain will be. Will this be a “Treash hire” or an outstanding move into the future?

    Only time will tell.
