Kansas City Chiefs WR Marquise "Hollywood" Brown took a positive step toward recovery on Sunday after suffering a posterior sternoclavicular joint dislocation.

The injury occurred on the first offensive snap of the preseason Week 1 game against the Jacksonville Jaguars. Brown caught an 11-yard pass, but he was driven into the ground on the ensuing tackle.

Brown was taken out of the game and quickly ruled as questionable to return. After the game, we learned that Brown had been hospitalized with a posterior sternoclavicular joint dislocation , the same injury suffered by Tyreek Hill against the Jaguars in 2019.

Less than 24 hours since the injury occurred, ESPN's Adam Schefter reports that Brown has been discharged from the hospital and cleared to fly home. The rest of the Chiefs' team left to return to Kansas City on Saturday night.

Brown's discharge bodes well for the timeline of his injury recovery

The quick discharge from the Baptist Medical Center in Jacksonville suggests that the injury was reduced, likely in the same manner as Hill's in 2019. Hill had the injury reduced under anesthesia but he did not require any surgical intervention.

That's to say Brown likely didn't require surgery last night and didn't have any complications involving the sternoclavicular joint puncturing blood vessels or vital organs. Had that been the case, I'm told he would have needed to stay in the hospital longer for observation and recovery. So, that's a best-case scenario for Brown from a personal wellness and professional standpoint.

Brown is still expected to miss some time, but just how long remains to be seen. Don't expect him to participate in the remainder of the Chiefs' training camp or the preseason. Week 1 against the Baltimore Ravens, his former team, is certainly in doubt as well as the team has just 25 days to go until the season opener. I'd expect that the Chiefs will target a Week 3 return for Brown unless there are any setbacks along the way.

"I think he'll miss some time," Chiefs HC Andy Reid said on Saturday night. "We'll just see where it’s at, I mean, I said that they’re kind of going through it right now and we'll know more later on."

Brown took to X (formerly Twitter) on Saturday evening to deliver the following message.

Again, this is considered a "rare" injury in the NFL, but this is a medical and training staff that has experience with the injury and getting a player ready to return from it. That's one advantage the Chiefs might have in a tricky injury situation like this one.
