Lions are now on the lookout for a quarterback, here's one trade idea that sees the Lions get set at QB2 in exchange for an edge rusher

If there's one thing we've learned at Detroit Lions training camp this summer it's that the Lions have a backup quarterback problem. That was further cemented when we got to see guys in action this past Thursday night in the Lions first preseason game.

Nate Sudfeld had been showing some improvement during camp, but ON Thursday he went back to looking exactly like he looked last season. Hendon Hooker has been struggling with a lot of mechanics during camp and that showed through in the game as well.

Here's the thing, up until Thursday the growing understanding round Allen Park was that the Lions were more than likely going to carry three quarterbacks in 2024 because Hendon Hooker is just not ready to be a pro yet. That's still true even after he led a decent drive on Thursday.

Even worse is that he's potentially about to be robbed of another week of reps. Lions' head coach Dan Campbell said on Sunday that Hooker is in concussion protocol and he won't practice Sunday or Monday and that he may not be able to play against the Chiefs on Saturday.

So what do the Lions do? Well, it looks like they're now in the market for a quarterback and they could be making a move very soon. As early as today.

"Brad (Holmes) and I talked about that this morning, that could come down the wire, you know, today or tomorrow." Campbell said. "There is a chance, you know, I think we'll, we'll have a pretty good idea this afternoon as to do we need to go ahead and do that, just to make sure we've got a guy other than Nate, you know, for the game."

Falcons backup Taylor Heinicke has already been suggested by analysts. We have another suggestion that could be a big upgrade and that's Browns' quarterback Tyler Huntley

He is currently in a battle for the QB2 spot in Cleveland Dorian Thompson-Robinson and Jameis Winston and there's reason to believe he may lose his spot and be cut. The Browns likely want to continue to work with Thompson-Robinson and Winston is just a more trusted QB2 at this point.

The Lions wouldn't be able to grab Huntley on the waiver wire if he's cut because he's likely to fetch a lot of claims and the Lions are low on that board.

With that in mind, a trade would be the way to get it done. Here's a proposal that could net Huntley for the Lions:

Lions get: Tyler Huntley and 2025 seventh-round pick
Browns get: James Houston and a 2025 sixth-round pick

This would an enticing move for the Browns to make. This way they would get something for Huntley instead of waiving him and getting nothing. In terms of the James Houston aspect of this, it's just not working out.

I know Lions fans hate that because he had such a fun rookie season, but there's been a lot of struggles since then and the Lions are looking for players that can do more than one thing . Houston has also had trouble doing that one thing by the way.

In Cleveland he can fit better and the Browns can use him as a pass rush specialist where as the Lions need someone who can do more than that.

Huntley could come in and supplant Sudfeld right away and give the team time to work with Hooker and maybe next year he can be what they hoped he would be. Huntley has starting experience in the NFL. He's started nine games in the past three seasons and even made the Pro Bowl as an alternate in 2022. This is definitely a move worth making for the Lions.
