The Chicago Bears got the first look at their first overall pick on Saturday against the Buffalo Bills and Caleb Williams lived up to the hype during his limited debut.

Williams led two scoring drives for the Bears, both ending with Cairo Santos field goals, while showing off his arm strength, accuracy, and athleticism in the process.

While everyone raved all weekend about Williams' impressive play on the field , everyone seems to be overlooking the play of his starting offensive line .

On the opening drive of the game, the Bears offensive line consisted of Braxton Jones, Teven Jenkins, Coleman Shelton, Ryan Bates, and Darnell Wright. The ideal starting five considering all the absences the team had during the week .

The pass protection up-front looked strong for Williams, as was the level of blocking in the run game. Even former Bears guard Kyle Long weighed in on what he saw.

The most impressive player up-front for the Bears on Saturday was easily Jenkins at left guard. According to Pro Football Focus , Jenkins' 90.3 blocking grade was the second-highest in the entire league. Jenkins had multiple plays where he completely up-rooted opposing defensive linemen.

The best play Jenkins put up on the tape from Saturday's game came on Williams' first drop back. On the play, Williams was pushed out of the pocket and moved toward the right sideline before throwing the ball away. Williams was hit out of bounds after throwing the ball by Bills linebacker Terrel Bernard. Jenkins immediately ran over to check on his quarterback before getting in Bernard's face after the play. That's exactly what you'd like to see out of your offensive linemen if you're a quarterback.

Jones at left tackle also had a strong performance in pass protection, finishing with an 84.0 pass block grade, the second-highest on the team. Overall, Williams' was only pressured on two total drop backs, per PFF. He had plenty of time to operate in the pocket during his two drives and managed to escape for a 13-yard gain at one point.

Ian Hartitz had the most interesting and eye-opening stat from Williams' debut that should have fans excited. Caleb Williams had an average time to throw of 3.56 seconds on Saturday. Justin Fields' NFL-high average time to throw in 2023 was 3.39.

The Bears' front office made it a point to overhaul the offensive line and challenge the returning players to step up to a higher level. After one game, the starting unit seems to be much more improved than we could have imagined.
