Haason Reddick's tenure with the New York Jets might end before it actually begins. On Monday, according to NFL insider Jordan Schultz and multiple other sources, the edge defender requested a trade from the team.

The Jets acquired Reddick from the Philadelphia Eagles earlier this offseason for a 2026 third-round pick — and it can become a second-rounder if Reddick plays 67.5% of the Jets' defensive snaps and has at least 10 sacks in 2024.

However, Reddick was really willing to play hardball . The Jets possibly thought that a different scenario would bring fresh air to the negotiations, but the player hasn't agreed to anything the Jets offered.

He skipped the offseason, including mandatory minicamp, and training camp. Reddick forfeited a $250,000 workout bonus and was fined $50,000 for missing the activity. Now, he hasn't (and probably won't) report to training camp, incurring additional $50,000 daily fines. On their side of things, the Jets will not negotiate with a player who isn't on the team.

Haason Reddick is slated to make $14.25 million in base salary this season, with $500,000 available in incentives. That's why the Jets acquired him, thinking they could get a player who's had 27 sacks over the last two seasons for the price of a mid-level free agent. But that's also why Reddick doesn't want to play. He tried to negotiate a new deal with the Eagles, but they couldn't get it done and decided to trade him away.

Now, the Jets are not forced to move him again, especially if they can't get a fair compensation. And they released a statement saying the plan is to keep Reddick around.

But the situation is becoming even more messy, and it's up to general manager Joe Douglas to decide what he's going to do to manage a self-inflicted controversy.
