Chiefs host former starting QB Alex Smith as special guest at training camp practice on Tuesday

The Kansas City Chiefs have had quite a few special guests visit the team during training camp practices at Missouri Western State University in St. Joseph, Missouri.

They already hosted former Las Vegas Raiders HC Jon Gruden for a week of practice sessions. The latest guest for the Chiefs is far too familiar with the dorms in Missouri Western State. He probably has a few good stories to tell about Andy Reid and Travis Kelce, too.

Former Chiefs QB Alex Smith was spotted coming down the hill to practice in St. Joseph, Missouri on Wednesday, accompanied by his former teammate Kelce. FOX 4 Kansas City reporter Harold R. Kuntz snapped a photo of the two.

Smith, of course, was acquired by the Chiefs in a trade with the San Francisco 49ers back in 2013. A former first-overall pick in the 2005 NFL draft out of Utah, Smith was considered a bust for many years before breaking out in 2011. He was replaced by Colin Kaepernick in 2012 after a concussion knocked him out for several games down the stretch of the season. He played five seasons in Kansas City after the trade in 2013, recording a 50-26 regular season record, 17,608 passing yards, and 102 total touchdowns. It was the best quarterback play the team had seen in quite some time.

Smith is often credited for helping in the development of Patrick Mahomes during the 2017 NFL season, knowing full well that the rookie would eventually replace him as the starter in Kansas City. He downplays his involvement, but Reid and Mahomes always give him his due credit.

The Chiefs would eventually trade Smith to Washington, where he'd finish his NFL career, mounting an epic comeback following a gruesome leg injury.

Since retiring from the league, Smith has started a broadcast career, which is likely his reason for taking a visit out to St. Joseph, Missouri. He currently works as an analyst on ESPN's Monday Night Countdown, in addition to contributing to other ESPN network shows. He constantly keeps up with the Chiefs and he even accurately picked them to defeat the 49ers in Super Bowl LVIII.
