Minnesota Vikings receive awful news regarding rookie quarterback J.J. McCarthy's knee

There was some worry with Minnesota Vikings quarterback J.J. McCarthy on Monday night when head coach Kevin O'Connell told the media that he wouldn't be practicing during Monday night's press conference. The news sent fans into a panic and on Tuesday afternoon, that panic has come to fruition.

According to ESPN's Adam Schefter, McCarthy is set to undergo knee surgery that will determine how long he will be out for.

While Schefter was the first to report the news, it was NFL Network's Tom Pelissero who had details of the injury. It looks to be a meniscus injury. It was a brutal blow to the Vikings after McCarthy had an excellent preseason debut.

McCarthy was tremendous with two touchdown passes on 11 completions. He looked every bit the part of a franchise quarterback and the development looked to be on the right track.

Meniscus surgeries could lead to multiple outcomes. If it's a complete tear, that injury could take months to heal with a full repair. If it's minor, McCarthy could be out just 4-6 weeks. We will know in due time.
