The Indianapolis Colts signed a player from head coach Shane Steichen's past to replace injured player

Wide receiver is a position group that seems pretty locked up on the Indianapolis Colts roster on paper.

But that didn't stop them from adding veteran Greg Ward Jr. following a large tryout they hosted on Tuesday .

Ward Jr. signed with the Philadelphia Eagles in 2017 as an undrafted free agent out of Houston. He made his regular-season debut with the team in 2019 and appeared in 40 games over three seasons (2019-2021). During his career, he caught 88 passes for 768 yards and ten touchdowns. His best season came in 2020 when he set career highs across the board with 53 catches, 419 yards, and six touchdowns.

During Ward Jr's time with the Eagles, he spent time under now Colts head coach Shane Steichen, who was his offensive coordinator for the 2021 and 2022 seasons. Ward Jr. appeared in all 17 games with the team in 2021 and was on the Eagles injury reserve for the 2022 season. To make room to sign Ward Jr., the Colts waived injured WR Ethan Fernea. Fernea has been with the Colts since 2022, when they signed him to their practice squad as an undrafted free agent. If he clears waivers, I assume the team will keep Fernea around on their injury reserve list. But we will have to wait and see if they choose that route.
