LSU flips elite 5-star recruit who decommitted from Michigan Wolverines despite Georgia's interest

The LSU Tigers were able to flip one of the fastest 2025 recruits in the country from the Michigan Wolverines. Michigan saw Phillip Wright decommit from the program about two weeks ago, and now he's committed to LSU. Georgia was chasing the newest Tiger.

Originally from Destrehan, Louisiana, the 3-star recruit stands at 5-foot-11 and weighs 175 pounds. He is not just an average football prospect, but he also shines brightly as a track athlete. His remarkable speed would have been a significant asset for Michigan, especially during their team overhaul led by head coach Sherrone Moore.

Wright, who Georgia and LSU had previously courted, and a host of other leading Power Four institutions, pledged his allegiance to the Wolverines in July 2024. However, he remained receptive to advances from other teams, including the Bulldogs.

With a solid three-star rating (88) and positioned as the nation's 65th wide receiver by 247sports, Wright's capabilities might be underrated. His impressive 10.46 100-meter dash time signals his potential to score from virtually anywhere on the field, presenting a perpetual threat.

His standout track performance has led some to overlook his football prowess, particularly as a receiver.

Despite my earlier report favoring LSU as his likely choice, Wright has now decided to make that move official.

"There have been a few people that call me a 'track guy,'" Wright told 247Sports earlier this summer. "But my track trainer says I'm a football player that's just blessed with abilities to run track. That's what he tells me, and I feel like he's right."

Previous speculations had pinned the Wolverines as possible front-runners or at least on even footing in securing Wright's initial commitment. LSU, however, was always considered a major contender for his recruitment.
