Chiefs HC Andy Reid just told a major fib about Patrick Mahomes, starter playing time that he tells every year

The Kansas City Chiefs are gearing up to face the Detroit Lions at GEHA Field at Arrowhead Stadium in preseason Week 2.

Traditionally, the second preseason game is the one where Chiefs HC Andy Reid gets an extended look at the starters. He spoke to reporters about the playing time split for Saturday's game following the conclusion of training camp at Missouri Western State in St. Joseph, Missouri on Thursday.

"As far as the playtime goes, the ones will take a half," Reid said. "And we'll kind of fill in after that, and just see how, see how the rest of that goes for the third and fourth quarters."

Why Reid would play the starters for the first half during the preseason, especially after Hollywood Brown was injured on the first play of preseason Week 1 against the Jacksonville Jaguars? The truth is the starters won't play for the full first half.

What Andy Reid actually means when he says Patrick Mahomes and the starters will play the first half

Andy Reid tells the same fib every year ahead of preseason Week 2. Just last season, he said the starters would play the first half, yet Patrick Mahomes and company played just three series against the Arizona Cardinals. Mahomes, Travis Kelce, and others were warming the bench by the second quarter. The first two series resulted in a punt, then the third series resulted in a Justin Watson touchdown reception.

Sometimes the starting offensive line and a few skill players will stay in the game for a fourth series to give the team's backup quarterback a look with the starters. They've done it in the past with Chad Henne. Last year, they did it with Shane Buechele, who was battling with Blaine Gabbert for the No. 2 job. This year, Reid says they might do it with Carson Wentz.

"There's a chance we'll get him in there and just see how that goes," Reid said of Wentz playing with starters. "I'm gonna just play it by ear, but he'll be ready to do that."

On the defensive side of the ball, Spags tends to stick to a similar routine. You'll see the majority of the starters for a few series, then he'll start to rotate in some players who participate in certain sub-packages.

Which starters aren't expected to play vs. the Lions on Saturday?

As for some specific starters getting work in preseason Week 2, don't expect DT Chris Jones, S Justin Reid, LB Nick Bolton, and CB Jaylen Watson to play on defense.

On offense, Reid indicated that RT Jawaan Taylor, who suffered a shoulder injury in practice on Wednesday , wouldn't play on Saturday. He also seemed to indicate this wouldn't be a long-term issue for Taylor.

"He won't go this weekend, but I think, I think he's gonna be OK," Reid said.

He didn't quite have a decision on starting LG Joe Thuney, who has been working his way back from a pectoral injury suffered in the playoffs last year.

"Yeah, we'll I'm gonna just kind of see on that," Reid said. "I'm not gonna force it see how he feels after today but we'll let, we'll let you know on that.":

Other fringe starters on offense who could miss time include RB Clyde Edwards-Helaire (illness) and OT Wanya Morris (bone bruise).
