New York Giants cut ties with veteran player that had a chance to play a notable role on the 53-man roster

The New York Giants' latest move points to plenty of confidence in young players. They've cut ties with a veteran defender, who could have played a role for them in 2024 on defense.

Giants release veteran DB Jalen Mills

The move comes as a bit of a surprise. Mills, thirty years old, projected as a key backup on the back end for New York. He has experience at cornerback and safety and made sense to slot in behind Dane Belton as strong safety and Dru Phillips at nickelback.

Mills has dealt with an injury this offseason. In fact, he never hit the field for a practice with the Giants. According to Adam Schefter, he is now healthy, though.

The defensive back has played in 106 career games in the pros. He recorded eight starts for the New England Patriots in 2023.

New York signed Mills this offseason to a one-year veteran benefit deal with $300,000 guaranteed. That money, effectively, went to waste since Mills will not play a snap with the team. That situation happens in the NFL, but the decision remains a bit odd since the secondary remains a potential weakness for New York.

We will see if the young talent shakes out to make a major impact for the Giants in 2024. They spent two day two picks on defensive backs in the 2024 NFL Draft.

The Giants clearly believe in those guys and want them to get the most reps possible, considering this latest release.
