Patrick Mahomes' kryptonite just signed with one of the Chiefs' 2024 opponents

The Kansas City Chiefs Week 3 matchup against the Atlanta Falcons just got a bit more interesting.

Free agent safety Justin Simmons signed a one-year, $8 million contract with the Falcons on Thursday. Simmons has spent the previous eight seasons with the Chiefs' division rival Denver Broncos - and unlike the rest of the Broncos' rosters during that time - he has played some of his best ball against K.C.

Simmons has intercepted Mahomes five times during his career, the most of any other NFL player by a mile. Simmons' last pick on Mahomes sealed Denver's first win in 16 tries against the Chiefs. Now that Simmons is a Falcon, he'll face off against Mahomes at least one more time.

The Chiefs will have their work cut out for them when they travel to Atlanta for their Sunday night showdown. The Falcons are a much-improved team from last year after acquiring the likes of quarterback Kirk Cousins, pass rusher Matthew Judon and receiver Darnell Mooney.

Simmons will pair with Jessie Bates III to make up a dynamic duo at safety for Atlanta. Hopefully for K.C. Hollywood Brown will be or will have already returned from injury to help take on the suddenly stacked Falcons secondary. One has to wonder, even with how great he is, if Simmons is in Mahomes' head a bit given the success he's had against him.

Simmons has been one of the best, and perhaps the most underrated, safeties in the league for a while now. He has recorded 443 career tackles, 30 interceptions and 64 passes defended while twice being selected as an All-Pro and to the Pro Bowl. Mahomes may shy away from Simmon as much as possible when they face in Week 3, but knowing Mahomes, the competitor in him will want to test him at least once.
