Philadelphia Eagles veteran right guard Tyler Steen left Thursday night's preseason game against the New England Patriots early with an ankle injury.

Steen was able to walk off the field on his own before he was carted off to the locker room.

He was soon ruled out and replaced by backup Nick Gates.

This injury is nothing new for Steen as he initially hurt his right ankle at the start of training camp . It appeared to be bothering him and affected how he played in the Eagles' preseason win over the Baltimore Ravens last week.

Steen was projected by many to start at right guard this season, but after Mekhi Becton didn't dress for tonight's game, that's a clear sign that Steen has already lost the job.

Steen was a third-round pick out of Vanderbilt by the Eagles in 2023 and played just 71 offensive snaps as a rookie last fall with 62 of them coming in his first and only start.'

Becton Has Never Played Right Guard

Becton, 6-foot-7, 363 pounds, came to Philly on a one-year deal back in April.

Before joining the Eagles, the former 11th overall pick out of Louisville by the New Jets in the 2020 NFL Draft played strictly at offensive tackle.

The Eagles, however, decided to take full advantage of his size and cross-trained him at multiple positions throughout spring ball and training camp. That means that not only has Becton taken reps with the left and right offensive tackle spots, but he has also worked a lot at right guard -- a position he's never played before.

He only took more reps at right guard when Steen was injured at practice, which he clearly benefited from.
