New York Giants make a telling move about who they want to play on offense for 2024 season

The New York Giants are making moves along their offensive depth. Just before preseason Week 2, the front office is dipping into free agency a bit after recent injuries.

Giants sign fullback and waive tight end/emergency quarterback

The Giants signed veteran FB Jakob Johnson and waived/injured Tyree Jackson. The Giants will not have an emergency QB for their second preseason game if Drew Lock does not serve as one. Tight end Lawrence Cager is also injured.

Johnson joins the Giants offense as a notable piece. New York may want to implement a fullback into their scheme, and Johnson is the perfect player for that role. He joins the Giants with a key connection to their coaching staff.

Johnson has played for Giants' new OL coach Carmen Bricillo every season of his pro career. Two of those years were with the Las Vegas Raiders. Three of them were with the New England Patriots.

The veteran fullback has been one of the busiest players at his position over the past handful of seasons.

A native of Stuttgart, Germany, Johnson originally signed with the Patriots as a free agent through the NFL International Player Pathway Program. He appeared in four regular-season games in 2019 with three starts and made his first career reception for five yards in Week 5. He remained with the Patriots for the 2020 season and played all 16 games with 11 starts at fullback and scored his first career touchdown in Week 2. The touchdown catch was the first regular-season touchdown scored by an International Pathway program participant. -- New York Giants

We will see how big of a role Johnson plays this season, but I would expect him to lock down a roster spot, at the least, entering the regular season.
