Kansas City Chiefs QB Patrick Mahomes has finally performed his white whale.

In preseason Week 2 against the Detroit Lions, Mahomes finally unveiled a behind-the-back pass that he's been working on since the 2020 NFL offseason. He has continued playing around with it in the offseason and practice sessions since , leaving the fanbase questioning when he might actually debut it in a game.

Well, on third down against the Lions in the first quarter of preseason Week 2, Mahomes finally felt confident enough to attempt it. He targeted Travis Kelce on the play, which was his first target of the game. Who else, but Mahomes' ultimate safety net? Kelce needed just three yards and he managed to get eight yards on the play.

    Check it out:

Mahomes got some work on the play during training camp practice at Missouri Western State University in St. Joseph, Missouri, completing a behind-the-back pass in team drills to veteran RB Isiah Pacheco just last week. Practice makes perfect, they say.

He was asked about that play after it occurred in practice and hinted that it could be coming soon in an actual game.

“There definitely is a possibility of it," Mahomes said. "If you do it (the behind-the-back pass), it’s got to work. It was a similar play to the one in the Super Bowl and I wasn’t going to do it in that situation. It was a good day for the offense, especially the last period. I had kind of got it going (with) two completions and then once you’re having a good day, you have the freedom to kind of try stuff like that. Obviously, when stuff’s not working out well, you don’t have that opportunity. It was cool that I completed it and it’s just that you want to get it in like a live type (of) atmosphere and that’s as live as you’re going to get in practice.”

Well, he certainly got it in a live-type atmosphere in the preseason, so the question now becomes: When is he going to do it in a regular season game?
