On Saturday, the Tennessee Vols landed a huge commitment from 2025 five-star offensive lineman David Sanders Jr.
Sanders, 6-foot-6/290 lbs from Charlotte, NC, is rated as the No. 1 offensive tackle in the nation and the No. 2 overall player in the 2025 recruiting class.
Shortly after committing to the Vols, Sanders told 247Sports that he's hoping to help bring some more elite talent to Rocky Top.
One player that Sanders mentioned that he plans to help recruit to Tennessee is 2025 four-star offensive lineman Mason Short, who is currently committed to the Georgia Bulldogs.
"Mason is one of my best friends," said Sanders to 247Sports . "He's committed to Georgia so that's going to be a hard one, but that's my dog. I want him to come play with me so badly."
Short, 6-foot-5/305 lbs from Evans, GA, is rated in 247Sports' composite rankings as the No. 9 interior offensive lineman in the nation and the No. 24 player in the state of Georgia.
Scouting report on Mason Short via 247Sports : Big-bodied offensive lineman with tackle experience who could potentially provide roster versatility, but may project best in the long run to the interior. Plays with above average movement ability. Capable of pulling on schedule and getting to the second level with purpose. Encouraging drive-blocking context that should continue to improve with enhanced initial heavy-handedness and punch. Shows effective point-of-attack steering strength with promising hand placement consistency. Plays upright and compromises leverage at times, but also fairly flat-backed in pass protection with adequate foot quickness when aligned outside in those scenarios. Limited shot put and discus reps provide a bit of athletic context. Size, movement ability, and functional strength -- which seemed to get better as his junior season progressed -- make for a legitimate P4 O-line prospect who could probably fit right tackle or a guard role and become a competent starter in a big-boy league.
It seems unlikely that Tennessee will actually be able to flip Short, who was previously committed to Alabama at one point. After all, the Vols weren't one of Short's four finalists when he committed to Georgia in April (Clemson, Ohio State, and Kentucky were the other three finalists).
Bu maybe Sanders and the Vols can work some magic and convince Short that Knoxville is a better place for him than Athens. It seems clear that Sanders is going to do what he can to get Short to reconsider his commitment to the Bulldogs.
