The Minnesota Vikings quarterback room is a very interesting one. J.J. McCarthy is the future of the franchise but he will miss his rookie season in 2024. Sam Darnold is going to be the starter for the Vikings in 2024 but if he gets hurt, the ball will go to Nick Mullens.

An undrafted free agent in 2018, Mullens has started in 20 games during his NFL career, most of which with the San Francisco 49ers. During his time in the NFL, Mullens has played an exciting, yet frustrating brand of football. Mullens has thrown for 6,391 yards and 34 touchdowns. Unfortunately, he's also thrown for 31 interceptions.

Those interceptions have been an issue for him. During his 2023 season with the Vikings, he threw for eight touchdowns and nine interceptions. The lack of ball security is a major factor why Mullens isn't a starting quarterback in the NFL.

Nick Mullens knows to take care of the football

It's no secret that Mullens needs to take care of the football. He admitted that himself after the game against the Browns.

“If I protect the football, I feel that I am a better quarterback in this league. If we can go out and have no turnovers in a performance, it is big. It helps the team as we did turn the ball over as a group, and we won. That correlates to winning football games.”

When you watch the games that Mullens played in the 2023 season, he was firing the ball into tight spaces and making big time throws down the field. He was the reason the Vikings were in so many games at the end of last season. Unfortunately, he was also a main reason why they weren't able to pull those games out.

If Mullens can take a step forward in regards to securing the football, the Vikings will feel more comfortable about their backup quarterback.
