Washington Commanders player is officially on borrowed time after the team's latest trade

Riley Patterson's time with the Washington Commanders immediately became borrowed time after a poor performance against the Miami Dolphins in Week 2 of the preseason.

And sure enough, the Commanders traded for Cleveland Browns placekicker Cade York on Thursday, officially putting Patterson on the chopping block unless York just falls flat on his face. Per Sports Illustrated's Albert Breer, Washington traded a conditional seventh-rounder to the Browns in exchange for York's services.

There's a possibility that happens, because York made just 75% of his field goal attempts as a starter in 2022. At the same time though, the odds are against Patterson in a big way. Especially since the Commanders spent draft capital to acquire York - even if it's just a seventh-rounder.

And, per A to Z Cleveland's Brandon Little, York has had a really strong summer and should have no problem establishing himself as the guy in Washington:

Cleveland brought back York as their second kicker during the offseason to have through OTAs and training camp. Cleveland originally let go of York this time last year after a rocky rookie season that started off with a 58-yard game-winner over the Carolina Panthers. York has one of the biggest legs you’ll find and is the reason the Browns spent a fourth-round pick on him in the 2022 NFL Draft. York seems to have matured over the last year and has shown better accuracy. I see this as a low-risk, high-reward for the Commanders. - Brandon Little, A to Z Cleveland

"We got work to do. We got practice next week, and we'll see where that takes us," Quinn said after the Dolphins game. "But I was pleased to see Riley come back. He had an early miss and [I said], 'Hey man, we're going to get a lot more chances, here in this game to go for it.' And so, to see a player come back in that spot when you go through the, you know, adverse times...

"... That's basically, I'll explain to him, say, 'Man, get right back to it.' Because he had a fantastic day [on] Thursday and I think you guys who are at practice, saw six-for-six, and maybe three of them over 50. I think in pregame, he hit, over 60 yards today. He was really ready. Those are hard when you don't nail the performances, when you really feel ready. And so we got work to do there."

The Commanders had 89 players on the roster before the trade, so a corresponding move won't be necessary. It'll be interesting to see how the team splits the reps between the two guys between now through Sunday evening, when the Commanders take on the New England Patriots during Sunday Night Football.

And that's only if Patterson even lasts that long. Either way, his chances of making the final cut just went down the drain, again, unless something drastic happens.
