Former Notre Dame linebacker waived by the Buffalo Bills on Monday, looks for next opportunity

The NFL season is coming quickly, which means the teams are busy cutting down the roster following preseason action. As a part of several Buffalo Bills moves the last couple of days, former Notre Dame and Pittsburgh Panther linebacker Shayne Simon was waived.

A former top recruit coming out of Jersey City (N.J.) St. Peter’s Prep, Simon spent four seasons with the Notre Dame Fighting Irish program. During that time, he collected 27 total tackles, three tackles for loss, and five pass breakups in 30 games. Simon was their main starter in 2020 during their undefeated regular season, seeing his 2021 season cut short after one game due to injury.

After that 2021 season, Simon opted to enter the transfer portal to see what other opportunities are out there. He obviously ended up with the Pittsburgh program, where he quickly ascended into a starting position. In 25 games for the Panthers, Simon recorded 94 total tackles, 13 tackles for loss, seven sacks, eight pass breakups, and one forced fumble.

Simon went undrafted, which wasn’t much of a surprise. Despite being a good athlete at 6-2 and 235 pounds, his college career never really panned out. He was a ton better with Pittsburgh, but still left a lot to be desired.

The New Jersey native ended up signing with the Buffalo Bills after going undrafted, spending the preseason with them until being waived this week. He unfortunately wasn’t able to earn a spot amongst a very strong linebacker room with the Bills. That unit includes Matt Milano, Terrel Bernard, and Dorian Williams.
