Hype around star Ohio State true freshman hits all-time high after Ryan Day reveals historic plan for him in Week 1

If you're not ready for the Jeremiah Smith hype train hitting Columbus in full force this season, buckle in now. The receiver will become the first true freshman to start the season opener on offense since Ryan Day took over as head coach. While the Buckeyes will employ a rotation at receiver, Smith will be on the field for the team's first snap Week 1 against Akron.

Day confirmed the plan to feature Smith heavily as soon as this week in his latest press conference.

The competition at wide receiver is always as high as anywhere in the country. Emeka Egbuka is back in the fold for the Buckeyes, and he's expected to be a crown jewel for new offensive coordinator Chip Kelly. Egbuka's skill set and size should allow him to take some carries and be the primary target-getter in the offense.

However, there's plenty of opportunity for others to feast. Day confirmed there will be a rotation between Carnell Tate, Smith, Brandon Inniss, and Jayden Ballard. It all depends on the situation for when we'll see them.

Projecting expectations for Smith is difficult. The hype has been otherworldly, with beat writers going so far as to say he'd already be a first-round pick today. His blend of size (6-foot-3, 215 pounds) and 4.3 speed is only part of the puzzle.

Smith also has a tenacious work ethic, and his constant attention to detail and desire to improve will ensure he's maximizing his traits.

Does that mean he hits the 1,000-yard mark? It might, but the volume within the Buckeyes' passing offense will have more to do with his output than his talent. The talent is clearly there to have a monstrous freshman season.
