The New England Patriots coaching staff is expected to make a decision on the starting quarterback by Tuesday.

But when you ask Jacoby Brissett if he views himself as the starting quarterback, his answer is very telling.

"In my mind I am," the veteran said on WEEI.

So does that mean he expects to start against the Cincinnati Bengals in Week 1?

"In my eyes, I am," Brissett added. "I haven't heard anything differently. So that's what I have to go off of."

In the spring and at the beginning of the summer, there was no question that Brissett was the starter. And the expectation was that rookie Drake Maye would sit behind him and learn for a season before taking over.

However, Maye's performance in the preseason caused a lot of controversy. And even Jerod Mayo had a strong admission about how the competition has gone between the two.

"I would say at this current point, Drake has outplayed Jacoby," Mayo said on Monday.

But, there are a lot of factors that the New England Patriots head coach is taking into account.

"Now in saying that, we have to take in the full body of work, going all the way back to the spring and beginning of training camp. And we'll see where we end up" Mayo added. "But those are the conversations that will happen here over the next couple of days."

Mayo was asked to clarify these comments after his appearance on the radio show, and provided some context on where Maye has outshined Brissett.

"I would say it starts in practice and also in the game where Drake has played better," he explained.

Jacoby Brissett offers update on injury from preseason finale

Jacoby Brissett's time on the field during the New England Patriots final preseason game on Sunday night was very limited.

The plan was for the veteran to just get one or two drives. But after one, head coach Jerod Mayo made the decision to take him out. And part of that was because of a hard hit he took.

On one play Brissett had absolutely no time in the pocket and was knocked to the ground immediately by Commanders DE K.J. Henry.

After the play, the quarterback stood up and was seen in clear discomfort. But he did stay in to finish the drive that resulted in a punt.

After the game, Mayo told reporters that Brissett would have been able to continue and even told the head coach that he was good.

And on Tuesday, Brissett provided a crucial update on how his right shoulder is feeling.

"It's good. I think it was more of a precautionary measure; I hadn't gotten hit in 8 months, so it kind of surprised me more than anything," he told WEEI. "I'm excited, ready for the season ... I feel 100% fine."
