Positions the Indianapolis Colts should target on the NFL waiver wire following their 53-man roster cuts

The Indianapolis Colts finalized their 53-man roster on Tuesday.

Now, they have to study the cuts made across the NFL and decide whether or not there is a player or players they would like to put a claim in for.

After looking over their roster and the players now hitting the waiver wire three positions stand out as potential fits for the Colts.

Postitions the Colts should target on the waiver wire

    Safety:

The first position I'm watching is safety, more specifically, free safety. They are currently set to start Nick Cross, who has had a pretty strong summer. But behind him, I'm worried they don't have an option that I'd feel comfortable filling in at the position. The team kept four safeties, with the two reserves being Rodney Thomas II and Trevor Denbow. We saw Thomas II struggle as the team's starter last year, and Denbow is primarily a special teams ace for the Colts.

    Cornerback:

The Colts only kept five CBs on the active roster, all five members of the team's secondary that struggled last season. The team needs players they can trust to play on the outside or in the slot because, after their starters, the group they currently have is questionable at best. And I think the CB group is arguably the deepest position group hitting the waiver wire. But who knows they also cut two of their rookie CBs who flashed during training camp and the preseason.

    Nose Tackle:

After safety, the next position I think the Colts could target is nose tackle. Last year, we saw how bad the team backup options behind Grover Stewart are, as the Colts' run defense struggled tremendously. This led them to sign Raekwon Davis to fill the spot going forward. Sadly, he's missed all of training camp and all but one preseason game. It was still clear in his absence the other options on the team were not good enough to make Davis worry about his job. And with the only player behind him currently being primarily a pass rusher in Taven Bryan, they could for sure use a more reliable option.

    Running Back:

One of the biggest shocks from the Colts' initial 53-man roster was their choice to keep only three RBs. This seems to validate their claims that starter Jonathan Taylor is expected to return to dominating the snap share in the backfield after losing Zach Moss to the Cincinnati Bengals in free agency. If there's a player on the market who they feel they could trust as a between-the-tackle option, I think they should pounce.
