Packers have a new kicker, but waiver claims also brought negative news

The waiver claims were out a couple minutes after 11am (CT) on Wednesday, the limit for NFL teams to send requests for players waived on Tuesday. There are good and bad pieces of news for the Green Bay Packers coming from that.

    The good

The Packers have a new kicker. The team claimed rookie Brayden Narveson off waivers from the Tennessee Titans, which means the Greg Joseph tenure lasted one day.

The rookie went undrafted out of NC State and signed with the Titans. In his college career, he had also played at Iowa State and Western Kentucky. In the preseason, he converted six of seven field goals, including two of three from 40 or more yards. It's also notable, especially after a season with Anders Carlson, that Narveson converted both extra points he tried.

The claim also means the Packers will keep their 20-year tradition of having at least one undrafted rookie on its week 1 roster.

    The bad

Well, so much for the "nobody gets claimed" narrative. Three former Packers players ended up claimed off waivers by other teams — the highest number in the NFL alongside the San Francisco 49ers.

Two of them are really unfortunate news for the Packers. The Miami Dolphins claimed wide receiver Grant DuBose, who battled for a roster spot with a strong preseason, but was deprecated by Malik Heath.

The other was safety Anthony Johnson Jr., last year's seventh-round pick. He had a really solid preseason after starting the offseason program as a starting safety. However, the Packers preferred to keep special teamer Zayne Anderson. Now, Johnson goes to the New York Giants.

    What doesn't matter

The third former Packer claimed off waivers is offensive guard Royce Newman, who goes to the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. The former fourth-round pick started as a rookie in 2021, but regressed throughout his career and probably wouldn't be brought back to the practice squad anyway.

Other former Green Bay player moving elsewhere is Samori Toure. The 2022 seventh-round pick wasn't claimed off waivers, but he signed with the Chicago Bears' practice squad.

Now, teams are already allowed to officially build their practice squads . The Packers can add 16 players to the list, plus a 17th piece as a part of the International Pathway Program.
