Former All-Pro RB claims that the Chiefs heavily pursued him during the offseason

The Kansas City Chiefs' backfield almost got a major addition during the offseason.

In a story by Dan Pompei of The Athletic , Green Bay Packers running back Josh Jacobs claimed that the Chiefs tried hard to sign him.

“They were trying to get me hard,” Jacobs said. “But there was no way I was going there. I feel like once you are rivals with somebody, you have a genuine hate for them. I couldn’t see myself in that color. And besides, I never wanted to be the guy that joined the dominant team. I want to be the guy that beats the dominant team.”

It has been apparent that the Chiefs have been searching for a solid No. 2 running back behind starter Isiah Pacheco for quite some time. Backup Clyde-Edwards Helaire has been battling through PTSD issues and missed a big chunk of training camp and all of preseason.

Undrafted rookie free agent Carson Steele impressed during preseason , but his inexperience is still a bit of a concern. He will likely be a bit of a hybrid between half back and full back and used mostly during short yardage situations. This led K.C. to sign free agent Samaje Perine , who should be the offense's top pass-catching and third down back.

With the addition of Perine, the Chiefs may now have a solid backfield, but it's hard not to wonder what things would be like if they were able to land Jacobs. The duo of Pacheco and Jacobs would have arguably been the best in the NFL. Jacobs is a well-rounded back with a nice blend of power and speed and is a threat as a receiver as well.

Keep in mind, however, that there was no way the Chiefs could have matched the four-year, $48 million contract that Green Bay gave him. In addition to that, Jacobs will be the unquestioned workhorse of the Packers' backfield as opposed to splitting time with Pacheco had he signed with K.C.

As far as Jacobs' comments about there being no chance he would ever join the Chiefs just because he's a former Las Vegas Raider, that sounds a bit weird. Passing on the opportunity to play in future Hall of Fame coach Andy Reid's offense and win a Super Bowl would be an odd decision to say the least. To each their own, I suppose.
