Since the Oklahoma Sooners joined the SEC , all we have heard is how the Texas Longhorns are ready, and the Sooners are not. Sure, the SEC is a different breed of football, but let's not act like Brent Venables wasn't already prepared for this. The team is more than ready, so much so, that their true freshmen are ready.
Of course, we know about Jayden Jackson and getting the start against Temple as a true freshman, but the Sooners have plenty of other young guys, too, who are all ready for the physicality of the SEC. One of those guys is Michael Boganowski.
Boganowski is a notable addition to the University of Oklahoma's football team, particularly for his role in the defensive backfield. Boganowski was a highly-touted recruit, recognized for his versatility on the field. He committed to Oklahoma over other notable programs like Florida State, Kansas State, and Kansas, highlighting his status as one of the top prospects in his state, and choosing OU over several schools that are in his home state.
His commitment to Oklahoma was seen as a significant win for the Sooners' recruiting class of 2024. Initially, Boganowski was listed as both a linebacker and a safety, showcasing his versatility. However, at Oklahoma, he's primarily positioned as a safety, with the capability to transition to the "cheetah" position, a hybrid role in Oklahoma's defensive scheme that requires speed, agility, and intelligence. His physicality and ability to deliver big hits have been huge during fall camp.
"Michael Boganowski," said senior safety Billy Bowman, "that’s a guy right there who will knock your head off."
As a freshman, Boganowski has already started making an impression during fall camp because of his physicality and fearlessness. His performance has been such that even if he doesn't start immediately, he's expected to contribute significantly on special teams and potentially see time in the defensive backfield due to his size, athleticism, and understanding of the game.
Boganowski is viewed as a future star in Oklahoma's secondary, especially with the Sooners transitioning to the SEC, where physicality and versatility are paramount. His development could see him playing a crucial role in defending against the high-powered offenses typical in the SEC.
"Oh, he’s a thumper. He’s a hard-hitter for sure. I ain’t gonna lie, he’s got that title for sure," junior defensive back Robert Spears-Jennings said. "He has a lot to learn but he learns so fast. Like when he first got here, it’s night and day. So that’s like my little brother. I’m taking care of him, and it makes me so proud of the way he’s acting."
So, for others to think that Oklahoma isn't ready, when their youngest players, true freshmen , who haven't played a snap yet, are already prepared, is just silly. The Sooners are more than ready.
