Ricky Pearsall is taking positive steps in his recovery from a gunshot wound he suffered on Saturday, when the San Francisco 49ers wide receiver was the victim in an attempted robbery .

NBC Sports Bay Area's Matt Maiocco reported that San Francisco's Zuckerberg General Hospital had upgraded Pearsall to "fair condition" on Sunday. His condition was previously described as "serious but stable" by the 49ers.

Pearsall, the 49ers' rookie first-round draft pick, was walking on Geary Boulevard in San Francisco shortly after 3:30 p.m. PDT when the suspect, a 17-year-old from Tracy, CA, tried to rob him with a gun.

A physical altercation ensued, during which both Pearsall and the suspect were shot.

Pearsall suffered a gunshot wound through the chest that exited out his back, according to a post from his mother, Erin, on social media.

"Thanks be to GOD it missed his vital organs. He is in good spirits right now," she wrote.

Maiocco said on an Instagram Live video that a person with knowledge of the situation told him Pearsall had been "unbelievably lucky".

Both Pearsall and the suspect were transferred to hospital after police responded to the scene at approximately 3:37 p.m.

The 49ers selected Pearsall with the 31st overall pick in this year's draft after an impressive final season with Florida.

He returned to practice this week having missed much of training camp with a shoulder injury. Pearsall was due to make his NFL debut a week from Monday when the 49ers host the New York Jets at Levi's Stadium in their regular-season opener.
