It did not start how Ohio State wanted it to against Akron with just a 17-3 lead at halftime, but the Buckeyes put it all together by the end and won 52-6 to start the season .

In the second half, the Buckeyes handled a team like Akron just as you would expect them to. Outscoring them 35-3 and was able to play backups for much of the final quarter.

Following the game, Akron head coach Joe Moorhead sounded a lot like a guy who has a ton of respect for the Buckeyes program.

“I learned that Ohio State is an incredibly talented team that’s very well coached and will have an opportunity, in my opinion, having coached against the 2019 LSU team — and took my son to see Michigan last spring over a recruiting visit,” Moorhead explained. “So I know what a team that can play for the national championship looks like, and this looks like a team that can play for a national championship. It is just an embarrassment of riches. Everywhere you look there’s a guy that can catch it, break a tackle and score, or a guy that can run by you, and a guy that can throw the ball, and a line that can protect.”

The Buckeyes obviously outmatched Akron and it was obviously going to be a lopsided game. Still, Moorhead has been around for the last couple of decades and has had his fair share of battles with quality college football programs. The 2019 LSU team led by Joe Burrow may be one of the best and he slightly compared the Buckeyes to them in a way.

Ohio State was led by freshman wide receiver Jeremiah Smith , who totaled two touchdowns and north of 90 yards receiving on six catches. Carnell Tate and Emeka Egbuka both made plays in the receiving game and the Buckeyes offense showed what it could do in the second half mostly.

Moorhead, who has coached at the likes of Penn State, Mississippi State, and Oregon seemed to be impressed by the Buckeyes in game No. 1. It could be a good sign of what is to come when you factor in that the Buckeyes did not start well.
