The Oklahoma Sooners are going to get to show off some of their historic programs this week against the Houston Cougars, a former rivalry game from last season when the Cougars played in the Big 12. But, this isn't like all of their other Big 12 rivalry games, because of the Cougars' previous time in the American Conference.

The Sooners, on the other hand, have a ton of history in the Big 12 Conference and even in the South West Conference. They are one of the more historic college football teams in the history of the sport, and the history speaks for itself.

The Sooners' early success came under coach Bennie Owen in the early 20th century, but it was Bud Wilkinson who truly elevated the program to national prominence from 1947 to 1963, leading to three national championships in 1950, 1955, and 1956. His most notable achievement was a 47-game winning streak, which stood as the NCAA record for over 50 years.

Following Wilkinson, Barry Switzer took the helm from 1973 to 1988, ushering in another golden era with the adoption of the wishbone offense. Switzer's teams won three national titles in 1974, 1975, and 1985, establishing Oklahoma as a powerhouse in college football.

Bob Stoops was hired in 1999. Stoops immediately turned the program around, winning a national championship in his first season. His 18-year tenure saw the Sooners become a perennial contender, with multiple Big 12 titles and appearances in the new College Football Playoff system.

This week against the Houston Cougars, the Sooners are going to wear their throwback uniforms that represent the Wilkerson era, and man, the uniforms are sweet. You can see them here , along with all of the details as well.
