Oklahoma Sooners Rise Into Top 15 In Both AP & Coaches Poll Following Week 1

The Oklahoma Sooners took care of business in their season opener against the Temple Owls. The Sooners delivered a dominant defensive performance on their way to a 51-3 victory.

Thanks to their dominant performance, as well as others teams faltering in their season openers, the Sooners moved into the top-15 of both the AP Poll and Coaches Poll .

Oklahoma rose to 15th in the AP Poll, leapfrogging LSU, who tumbled to 19th after their loss to the USC Trojans.

On the coaches poll, the Sooners rose all the way to 13th. Oklahoma is one spot ahead of USC in that poll and just one spot behind fellow SEC member Tennessee.

I think this is a fair rating, all things considered. Oklahoma can be better than they showed in Week 1, especially on the offensive side of the ball. There are still too many question marks health-wise and performance-wise before we can label the Sooners as a top-10 team in the country.

They have plenty of upside to move further upwards as they get healthier and begin to provide answers to the questions we still have. We'll see how much better they can be when they take on the Tennessee Volunteers in Week 5.

Oklahoma's schedule features six teams who rank in the top 25 of both polls, including four teams who are currently in the top ten: Texas (3), Alabama (4), Ole Miss (6), and Missouri (9/10). In addition, they will take on two other currently ranked teams in Tennessee (14/12) and LSU (18/19).

The Sooners knew it would be a challenge in the SEC, and they'll be well-tested this season. If the defense continues its strong performance and the offense gets healthier, Oklahoma could push for a top 10 finish to their initial SEC season.
