Latest news has the Jets already seeing one of their 2023 problems in 2024

Nobody will forget when the Jets saw their season rupture along with Aaron Rodgers’ Achilles last year, but that wasn’t the only problem with 2023 New York Jets.

Injuries along the offensive line saw the Jets start 13 different OL combinations in 17 games. Not that Zach Wilson, or Trevor Siemian, or Tim Boyle did the team any favors at the quarterback position, but the offensive line made it hard for any QB to have success.

The Jets spent most of their offseason assets trying to ensure that the same offensive line problems would not be an issue in 2024, but that plan took a hit already today as the Jets lost one of their important depth pieces before even lining up for Week 1.

Jets HC Robert Saleh told reporters that the team is placing veteran OL Wes Schweitzer on injured reserve. In 2023, Schweitzer appeared in six games and made two starts for the Jets. Schweitzer hurt his hand earlier in the week and will now miss at least four games.

Schweitzer was likely the first guy off the bench if the Jets had any need along their interior offensive line. Rookie Olu Fashanu has said that he would be comfortable filling in at guard if needed and the Jets also have Xavier Newman on the 53-man roster.

Linebacker Zaire Barnes was also ruled out for the game in San Francisco this week with an ankle injury.

While the Jets continue to rule out guys for their week one matchup, the San Francisco 49ers seem to be getting everyone back in time to start. Earlier this week Saleh said there was still hope for Haason Reddick to play, but today admitted that it's ‘fair to say’ the Jets will be without him.

The Athletic’s Dianna Russini reported today that Reddick doesn’t plan to end his hold out any time soon as he is willing to “die on his sword” with the Jets.

While Reddick certainly won’t literally die on this sword, he won’t be paid either. Someone is advising Reddick and they are doing a terrible job. He will be losing $852,941 each game he continues this holdout. And the Jets have all the leverage at this point.

If Reddick doesn’t report to the team by week 10, this whole process starts over again next year. It doesn’t cost the Jets anything to keep him if he doesn’t want to show up. If he wants that big contract, missing a year of your prime is not going to help get it done.

Bottom line: Haason needs to get himself in the building and then a negotiation can truly begin.
