Paul Finebaum seemed impressed with the Longhorns, but the longtime national voice of SEC football still has Georgia ranked above Texas and everyone else.

Speaking on ESPN’s “SportsCenter,” Finebaum gave his opinions about multiple teams after a wild day in college football. He still puts the No. 1-ranked Bulldogs atop the heap.

“I’m Paul-in, and I know that is saying a great deal after watching Texas play yesterday, but I feel like Georgia is a notch above,” Finebaum said. “They’ll get each other in the middle of October and we can settle that. By the way, there’s a chance Georgia and Texas could play three times this year in October, in Atlanta in December, and some time, probably for the national championship. I think they are that elite but I think Georgia is in a class of its own and that’s why I am all-in.”

Make no mistake, the Dawgs have looked solid jumping out to a 2-0 start. Georgia beat up Clemson 34-3 in the season opener and did the same to Tennessee Tech 48-3 on Saturday. Georgia opens SEC play this week with a road trip to Kentucky, followed by a trip to Alabama.

In Georgia’s first two games, the offense is averaging 7.8 yards per play while the defense is allowing just 3.2.

Texas is heading into a stretch where it should ring up lots of points and momentum. The Longhorns next have a three-game homestand against UTSA, Louisiana-Monroe and then the SEC opener against Mississippi State.

Realistically, it doesn’t matter if Texas is ranked No. 2-3-4 or wherever behind Georgia as long the as Horns keep winning. The two teams are scheduled to meet Oct. 19 at Royal-Memorial Stadium.

And remember, with the new College Football Playoff format, all teams have to do is finish ranked in the top 12 to make the postseason. A potential win or loss against Georgia in October likely won’t stop both teams from making the tournament.

Still, Texas wants to make a good impression in its first season in the SEC. And knocking off the current champions is the best way to do it.
