Oklahoma Sooners HC Brent Venables is brutally honest while talking about Jackson Arnold's play vs. Houston

The Oklahoma Sooners did not play up to the standards they have set for themselves, on both sides of the ball, but especially on offense -- so much so, that they were booed by their own home fans near the end of the game, when the Sooners were in the red zone, on a third and 11 with a chance to put the game out of reach a bit, they ran a quarterback draw for four yards.

It just wasn't a great showing for the Sooners on offense against one of the worst power four teams in the country, a week after beating the Temple Owls 51-3. And even against Temple, the offense didn't look great, but because they won 51-3, with some help from defense and special play setting them up in great positions, they brushed it to the side, specifically Jackson Arnold.

After last week's game, Arnold said "Who Cares?" because the team won . This week, I doubt that's his reaction, as they only beat Houston 16-12, and the offense was virtually non-existent. As the quarterback, Arnold has to eat a lot of that blame, and his head coach, Brent Venables, is telling him how it is after a putrid game.

“Inconsistent. Made some really nice plays, and then other times, [he] maybe tried to force it," Venables said in the postgame press conference. "Everybody around him gotta play well too. That’s part of it as well.”

I think the play-calling by offensive coordinator Seth Littrell actually called a pretty good game in terms of situational football. A few plays were questionable, but you get that every game with every team. However, the execution was terrible. And, yes, some of that is Arnold, but some of that is also the fact that this offensive line just isn't good with the injuries they have. This offense cannot be booed again.

The good thing is they still have one more game until they then get introduced to conference play. They have a game against Tulane, who is a fairly good football team, to get their offense going next week. And, that game so happens to be on ESPN, too, so everyone will see if their issues are fixed.
