Town of Princeville receives $11M grant for flood reduction infrastructure project
FEMA and North Carolina Emergency Management officials announced the approval of a $11 million grant to help an Edgecombe County town build a more resilient community.The Town of Princeville which is located below the Tar River has experienced repeated flooding since it was incorporated in 1885.ALSO SEE: City of Raleigh gets grant to expand Digital Inclusion Programming"Princeville's commitment to build outside of the floodplain and protect their community is a testament to their resilience," said FEMA Region 4 Regional Administrator Robert Samaan. "We are honored to make this funding announcement for a town rich with cultural history."The new grant will help the community become more resilient to more intense and frequent disasters, and build out of infrastructure on a 53-acre green field. The infrastructure includes stormwater management, wastewater collection, water distribution, and electric power systems to support new housing and civic services.
12-year-old boy drowns at Tucker Lake in Johnston County
A 12-year-old boy died on Saturday after drowning at a lake near Benson.The Johnston County Sheriff's Office said the incident happened at around 1 p.m. at Tucker Lake on Allen Crossroads just off Interstate 40.The boy's name has not been released.Check back for updates.ALSO SEE: Nearly 70 people rescued from rip currents along North Carolina beaches this week
Death investigation underway in Robeson County, sheriff says
A death investigation is underway in Robeson County on Saturday afternoon.Robeson County Sheriff Burnis Wilkins said the incident happened in the area of Dijour and Danbury Drive outside of St. Pauls.Authorities have not released any more information.This is a breaking story. North Carolina lawmakers appeal judge's decision blocking abortion-pill restrictions

Olympic trials: NC State's Berkoff headed to Paris, finished second in 100-meter backstroke
A few local swimmers are competing in this year's USA Olympic trials.NC State swimmer Katharine Berkoff has punched her ticket to Paris after finishing second in the 100-meter backstroke. Her time was 57.91 seconds, and she finished behind Regan Smith, who set a new world record of 57.13.Berkoff has five NCAA Championships, 30 All-America honors, and six ACC titles. According to our newsgathering partners at the News and Observer, she won the 100-yard backstroke five consecutive times at the ACC Championship and three national titles in the event.Berkoff is the 43rd NC State athlete and the 24th swimmer to compete in the Olympic games, the News and Observer reported. Her father, Dave, representing the United States, won four medals in the 1988 and 1992 Olympic Games.Cary native Claire Curzan also advanced to the next round of the finals for the women's 200-meter backstroke. She is already an Olympic medalist, earning a silver medal in the 4x100-meter relay in 2020.The 2024 Olympic swimming trials are Saturday, June 15 through Sunday, June 23 at Lucas Oil Stadium in Indianapolis, Ind.
1 dead, 1 injured after shooting in Wilson, police say
A shooting in Wilson Friday night left one man dead and another injured, according to police.Just after 9 p.m., Wilson Police Department officers were called to 1201 Downing Street for reported gunshots.Upon arrival, officers found Anthony Marquis Barnes, 43 of Wilson, suffering from a gunshot wound. He died at the scene.Police said a second victim, Rodney Earl Farm, 43 of Wilson, was found with a gunshot wound. He was taken to ECU Health Medical Center for further treatment.The Wilson Police Department is encouraging anyone with information regarding this case to contact the Wilson Police Department at 252-399-2323 or Crime Stoppers at 252-243-2255.

Dix Park Conservancy (DPC) announced the launch of a new initiative Friday to bring more international artists to Raleigh.The idea behind the initiative is to spotlight the importance of the arts in the Triangle. Country legend Willie Nelson will miss 2 North Carolina shows, says he's 'not feeling well'
Country music legend Willie Nelson will miss two performances in North Carolina this weekend due to health concerns.Nelson, 91, did not take the stage Friday night in Georgia for the first show of the Outlaw Music Festival Tour. He is a tour headliner.His team released a statement on Instagram, saying in part:"We regret to inform you that Willie Nelson is not feeling well and, per doctor's orders, has been advised to rest for the next four days. He is expected to make a quick recovery and join the Outlaw Music Festival Tour next week. In the meantime, Lukas Nelson and the Family Band, along with a few guests, will perform a special set to include Willie's classics and other songs."The Outlaw Music Festival Tour has a stop in Charlotte on Saturday night and one in Raleigh on Sunday. The tour includes other legendary musicians, like Bob Dylan, Robert Plant and Alison Krauss.Nelson is expected to rejoin them next week.The Outlaw Music Festival Tour will wrap up on September 20 in Gilford, New Hampshire.
NC-147 North lanes at Swift Avenue reopen after death investigation, Durham police say
NC-147 Northbound at Swift Avenue was shut down Saturday morning because of a death investigation, according to the Durham Police Department.All lanes have reopened after being closed for hours.🚨UPDATE: All lanes of traffic are back open.— DurhamPoliceNC (@TheDurhamPolice) June 22, 2024 Before 2:30 a.m., officers responded to a crisis call on NC-147 Northbound at Swift Avenue. They found a dead man, who has yet to be identified.According to DPD, he was last seen walking on Swift Avenue before he was found deceased on NC-147. The cause of death has not been determined yet.There was also a police presence Saturday morning at the intersection of West Main Street, Swift Avenue and Broad Street. This is near Duke East Campus. DPD has confirmed both scenes are connected.Police said more information will be released later.
Pedestrian hit by car in south Raleigh
A person was hit by a car Saturday morning in south Raleigh.At 2 a.m., Raleigh police, Fire, and Wake County EMS responded to a pedestrian hit by a car on the 2600 block of South Saunders Street.One person was taken to WakeMed as a trauma patient.No information has been released yet regarding the identities of the people involved in the crash or the circumstances surrounding the incident.
SBI identify man shot by deputy after hours-long standoff at Raleigh apartment
New details about an hours-long standoff at an apartment complex in Raleigh which ended with a deputy shooting a man.It happened Tuesday at the Oaks Apartments on Water Oaks Drive off Louisburg Road.The Wake County Sheriff's Office said deputies were serving an eviction order and the tenant, identified as 52-year-old Jason Thomas Lundwall, refused to leave.WATCH | Deputy shoots man after standoff that started over eviction orderIt made for a nerve-wracking day for residents in that northeast Raleigh community. All of them were finally let back into their homes as night fell.Nearby apartments were evacuated as a precaution. Officers surrounded the apartment complex and worked for nearly seven hours to get the man to come out.Around 5:30 p.m. deputies went inside the apartment to enforce the eviction order and remove the man. During the attempt to remove him, Deputy Michael Reitmann discharged his gun wounding Lundwall.Lundwall was taken to WakeMed with serious injuries.Investigators have not revealed why the deputy fired his gun. Man killed in stabbing following argument in Fayetteville
A man was killed in a stabbing on Friday afternoon in Fayetteville.Fayetteville police responded to reports of two men arguing just before 1:12 p.m. in the 700 block of S. Reilly Road. When officers arrived they found 30-year-old Anthony Powell with a stab wound.He was taken to Cape Fear Valley Medical Center where he later died from his injuries.Police said Albert David Smith, 56, of Fayetteville, was charged with first-degree murder in connection with the stabbing.He is being held at the Cumberland County Jail without bond.Anyone with information is asked to call the lead Detective D. City of Raleigh gets $300k Digital Equity Grant to expand Digital Inclusion Programming
The City of Raleigh announced on Friday that it received a grant for $300,000 from the North Carolina Department of Information Technology.The city said the Digital Equity Grant will support the expansion of Raleigh's Digital Inclusion Programming, such as the Digital Ambassador Program and Learn & Earn.The programs play a role in the city's efforts to bridge the digital divide by using technology to improve the lives of residents in Raleigh.To learn more about the program click here.

24 people hospitalized at WakeMed for heat-related issues since start of June
