(WHTM) — Pennsylvania State Police gave an update on the construction of their new academy in Derry Township.

“You can see the work in progress behind us,” spokesperson Lt. Adam Reed said. “And it is just that right now it’s a work in progress.”

Progress and change. The circle that graced the main entry is now gone, and heavy equipment fills areas where buildings once stood.

“That area where the K9 building was is going to be the grounds for the new Bureau of Emergency and Special Operations Buildings right there,” Reed explained.

The K9s will get new digs also. “There’s going to be a new kennel built and it’s going to be incorporating what was here already and improving upon that and adding a lot of other new features for us,” Reed said.

Also, there will be a new home for the mounted unit. “The horses are still going to be here. They’re going to stay as the construction is in progress. And when everything is done now, one unit is going to have an entirely new facility actually at the base of the hill behind us,” Reed said.

As for the humans, cadets will live in the academy’s newly named Marquee building. “Inside that is going to be a lot of the vital features that belongs here in our academy training classrooms, lecture hall, new memorial wall,” Reed said.

Along with indoor and outdoor training villages and more, the hope is that it will draw not only more cadets but also new opportunities. “For other agencies, everything from the local, state, and even the federal level. We hope they come here and train with us and share these facilities,” Reed said.

The project is expected to be completed by 2028.
