(WHTM) — At any given time, thousands of animals end up in Pennsylvania rescues and shelters and looking for permanent or foster care homes, including the York County SPCA.

I was able to sit down and speak with the non profit’s executive director Steve Martinez, who brought a furry friend along with him named Thumbalina, a “two month old kitten that was found in the engine of a car. The owner found her when she was just little bean-sized kitten.”

The SPCA has been taking care of her and put the kitten up for adoption, but it didn’t take long for her to find her new owner.

“We were going to announce she was available for adoption, and I went to a committee meeting and sure enough she got adopted at the meeting,” Martinez said.

Shelters across the state have been seeing a rise in surrenders. “Last year we had a 35% increase in stray dogs come in, this year, another 35% increase on top of that,” Martinez said, adding that the pandemic and economic factors may be the reason for the rise.

The York County SPCA also helps with the overpopulation by offering spay and neutering services for anyone, you don’t have to be a resident of the county. “We are really proud of our spay-neuter clinic. It just focuses on providing healthcare for community animals, so we will do over 12,000 spay-neuter surgeries just in the clinic alone, that doesn’t include the shelter side, where animals like Thumbalina get spay-neutered before we put them up for adoption,” Martinez said.

This weekend, the SPCA will be holding an event where adoption fees will be waived. More information about the event can be found online at the York County SPCA’s website.
