SALT LAKE CITY (ABC4) — A Cache County Sheriff’s deputy is hanging up his badge after six years of being a ‘very good boy.’ Cache Valley Sheriff’s Office announced that one of their police K-9s, Okar, is retiring and getting adopted.

Okar has served the office as a dual-purpose police dog since 2018.

“Okar has been an invaluable member of our team since he began his service,” the Sheriff’s Office said in a release on Facebook.

They noted Okar started in February of 2018 and the dog’s “high drive, joyful spirit, and love for the job made him a standout in every assignment.”

According to the sheriff’s office, the K-9 and his handler, Deputy Phil Johnson, worked alongside many divisions of the Sheriff’s Office which include the Patrol division, Corrections, Cache County’s Drug Task Force, Cache County’s SWAT team, and numerous other agencies throughout the Cache Valley and in Cache County.

In the release, the Sheriff’s Office said that Okar would now transition from duty to home life. Johnson and his family will be adopting Okar, now 8 years old, into the household.

Many people took to the comments to wish Okar a happy retirement. A Facebook commenter noted that Okar living with Johnson and his family “is the greatest thing ever.”

“Okar, you’ve been a true protector, a loyal friend, and an exceptional partner. Thank you for your remarkable dedication and service to both us and the entire community. Enjoy your well-earned retirement,” the sheriff’s office said online.
