PROVO, Utah (ABC4 Sports) – It’s game week for the BYU football team, and a decision on who the starting quarterback will be against Southern Illinois Saturday has been made.

Unfortunately for BYU fans, they won’t know until game day.

“We know our plan,” BYU head coach Kalani Sitake said Monday. “We know what we’re going to be doing, but we’re just not ready to tell everybody our game plan yet.”

There is a competitive advantage to making the Salukis prepare for both Jake Retzlaff and Gerry Bohanon. Sitake is tired of all the questions about the QB’s, but doesn’t want to reveal his decision.

“We have a plan, we know what we’re doing,” Sitake said. “We’ve been through this before, and we’re going to be just fine.”

The rest of the team knows who will be behind center for the season opener, but they’re going to keep it a secret.

“We’re just keeping it on the down low up until game time,” wide receiver Chase Roberts said. “But we’ve been able to figure out over practices and stuff who the guy is going to be, so we can watch film with him little bit more.”

There’s a great chance both Retlzaff and Bohanon will play at some time this season, so the Cougars are confident with both quarterbacks.

“This whole fall camp, Jake and Gerry have been sharing reps with the ones, and we’ve been making plays with both of them,” Roberts said. “It just brings so much confidence as receivers that whoever does start, we’re going to make plays and we’re going to score some touchdowns.”

There had been questions about LJ Martin’s status, but Sitake says his starting running back is healthy ready to carry the load, along with Hinckley Lopati and Miles Davis.

“LJ is ready to go,” Sitake said. “We’re excited to see him play. This is sophomore year, and it feels like he’s a different player. Last year, he was just trying to learn the offense. This year, he knows that already and he’s got so much ability.”

BYU and Southern Illinois will kick off the 2024 season Saturday at 6:00 p.m. at LaVell Edwards Stadium.
