BALDWINSVILLE, N.Y. (WSYR-TV) — The Syracuse Fire Department Hazardous Materials Response Team (HAZMAT) was called to a hydrogen leak at a fruit processing plant in Baldwinsville around 7:30 a.m. on Thursday, August 15.

The Belgium-Cold Springs Fire Department first requested the SFD HAZMAT after an alarm activation at the plant, located at 8864 Sixty Road, and reports of workers feeling ill.

HAZMAT members went into the plant and were able to find a battery-powered forklift that was leaking hydrogen gas while being charged, said SFD.

The forklift was unplugged, and the issue was resolved.

Issues like that with batteries can happen when a lead-acid battery becomes overcharged or impaired while charging, SFD said.

Two employees at the plant who were feeling ill were evaluated at the scene by medical personnel. One person was released at the scene and another was taken to the hospital for further evaluation, according to SFD.

There were no injuries to fire department personnel.
