One Person Died, And A State of Emergency Was Issued After Heavy Storms Hit The Tri-State Area

In the Tri-State area, the effects of Sunday night's heavy rain and floods are still felt on Monday.

Storms that dropped up to 10 inches of rain in Connecticut caused floods that killed at least one person. The crew found the body of a woman who went missing, and they are still looking for another woman.

Weather experts say the flooding had nothing to do with Hurricane Ernesto. On Monday, Ernesto was over the open Atlantic Ocean, but the East Coast of the United States was still expected to be hit by big waves, dangerous surf, and rip currents.

Suffolk County has been put under an emergency because of a second round of storms.

    Long Island

Suffolk County, on Long Island, declared a state of emergency after heavy rain hit the north shore overnight, washing away roads and forcing people to be rescued and evacuated.

Heavy rain and flooding were blamed for a lot of harm.

Suffolk County Police said they got dozens of calls from people whose cars were stuck in floodwaters and from people whose basements and first floors were flooded.

    Connecticut

At least two people were still missing on Monday in Connecticut. One was found dead after being swept away by floods near Little River in Oxford.

In Oxford, one person was in a car, and the other held on to a sign when a fast-moving stream of water swept them away.

On Sunday, firefighters rescued more than 12 people from a flooded restaurant in Beacon Falls, Connecticut, about 5 miles east of Oxford.

Eighteen people were stuck inside the Brookside Inn Restaurant by floodwaters, and there were worries that the building might be damaged.

    New Jersey

The severe downpour in New Jersey virtually stopped traffic. Hundreds of cars were stuck on the Garden State Parkway near East Orange.

Bad weather closed the Garden State Parkway and New Jersey Turnpike, according to a travel notice from the Authority. The river nearly swallowed 16 cars, including a state trooper's cruiser.

Rain turned streets into rivers in Edgewater, Hoboken, and Jersey City, and rising water sucked cars in other sections of the state.
