ABILENE, Texas ( KTAB/KRBC ) – A SWAT standoff in south Abilene ended when a suspect was killed by police Tuesday afternoon.

The standoff happened at a home near the corner of S 7th Street and Alameda Street around 2:00 p.m.

The suspect, identified as Jeremy Bennett, allegedly brandished a handgun and threatened two females inside a home before fleeing into a nearby residence he later barricaded himself inside.

Bennett also had an active warrant for Felon in Possession of Firearm.

SWAT team and Crisis Negotiations Team members attempted to negotiate with Bennett for several hours in an attempt to detain him peacefully.

However, they say Bennett eventually exited the residence while brandishing a handgun, which he allegedly pointed at officers after they tried to use a “less lethal impact weapon” to disarm him.

Once the gun was pointed at officers, they opened fire, striking Bennett at least one time.

Bennett was transported to the hospital where he later died from his injuries.

Officers involved in the shooting have been place on administrative leave as is policy while the Texas Rangers and the Abilene Police Department conduct their investigations into this officer-involved shooting.

No further information is available at this time.
