SCRANTON PREP GIRLS TENNIS: Starting lineup intact for defending state champions

KINGSTON — Scranton Prep is in the rare position of not only being the defending state Class 2A girls tennis team champion, but returning the entire starting lineup from that team.

“It’s exciting,” Classics coach Kendra Croker Brunner said during the district’s second Media Day. “The team is very close. They’ve been working extremely hard in the offseason to hopefully have another great season this year.”

The singles combination of Alyssa Wigley, Lily Lengyel and Emma Cuck went undefeated in the four matches of the Pennsylvania Interscholastic Athletic Association state team tournament.

Wigley and Lengyel then formed a team for the doubles tournament where they won a District 2 championship and reached the state quarterfinals.

Ella Cohen, Grace Devine, Nicole Krakovich and Hannah Lacoe complete the list of returning starters.

Maci Bulzoni and Sophie Haus are also back from the state championship team.

“The lineup may be a little different at times based on challenges within the team,” said Croker Brunner, who won District 2 singles and doubles titles in her career at Scranton Prep and went on to win Middle Atlantic Conference titles in all four of her seasons at Wilkes.

District 2 has won two of the last three state team titles in Class 2A.

Wyoming Seminary won in 2021 with Ilana Rosenthal as the number-one singles player. Rosenthal has won the last two state singles titles and leads the defending champion and current favorite of the Wyoming Valley Conference

“The girls know it’s tough just to get out of the district,” Croker Brunner said.

As expected, the Classics won all four of their matches through Labor Day by 5-0 scores.
