Putting EATS Act in farm bill would be a gift for corporate agriculture
Barb Kalbach is a fourth-generation family farmer in Adair County and board president of Iowa Citizens for Community Improvement. When the House Agriculture Committee marked up its draft farm bill in late May, representatives included a provision that’s a big gift for the corporate livestock industry. Dubbed the EATS Act (Ending Agricultural Trade Suppression), the measure would strip state and local governments of their ability to enact policies that protect our air, land and water from problems caused by factory farms.
Adair County arrest report - July 1, 2024
Dennis D. Buckner, 71, of Fontanelle, was taken into custody 8:42 p.m. June 27, at the Casey’s in Fontanelle, on the charge of harassment, third degree. According to an Adair County report, at approximately 7:08 p.m. the parent of a minor employed at Casey’s, reported his child had been harassed by a customer while working.
Iowa Auditor Rob Sand to Visit Adair and Guthrie Counties Next Week
Adair and Guthrie Counties will be seeing a state official next Tuesday, July 9th. Sand will be at Greenfield City Park from 1:45-2:45pm, and at Mitchell Park in Guthrie Center from 3:15-4:15pm. He will be available to answer questions that constituents may have about some of the new bills that have been passed, and work to help bring information that those in attendance may be looking for. According to Sand’s office, a recent poll shows that he has the highest job approval rating and lowest job disapproval rating of any state official.
Adair County Arrest Report
(Adair Co) The Adair County Sheriff’s Office arrested 22-year-old Igor Stoyan, of Lincoln, Nebraska, on Friday for OWI 1st Offense. Bond was set at $1,000 cash or surety. The Sheriff’s Office arrested 71-year-old Dennis Devee Buckner, of Fontanelle, on Thursday for Harassment 3rd Degree. Buckner allegedly made comments to a minor female about it being his birthday and asked her if she was going to give him a present, stating “she was just the right age”. Bond was set at $300 cash or surety.
Shirley Haupert Shares Experience of Serving Those Impacted by the Greenfield Tornado
A group of Jefferson residents were involved in the relief efforts for the Greenfield community in Adair County that is still recovering from the May 21st tornado. Shirley Haupert tells Raccoon Valley Radio that she was contacted by an individual at the First United Methodist Church in Greenfield about bringing members of the First United Methodist Church in Jefferson that she was a part of to serve a meal to the community members and volunteers that are helping with recovery effort. Haupert says about 14 people went to Greenfield on Saturday, June 15th and served about 85 people.
Adair County Board of Supervisors Meeting Recap
(Adair Co) Adair County Sheriff Jeff Vandewater provided an update to the Board of Supervisors this morning on where they are at with storm damage to their facilities. Sheriff Vandewater said they have a roof engineer coming today and the state had a crane out last Friday to clear debris from the State ISICS tower. Equipment on the tower was damaged by an almost direct hit during the May 21st tornado. Sheriff Vandewater said after inspection, it’s still not quite safe for climbers to be on the tower.
