Adam Krug leaves Adrian College men's hockey for AHL

ADRIAN — A new era of Adrian College hockey is coming in 2024-25 as head coach Adam Krug resigned Thursday to accept the assistant coaching job of the Edmonton Oilers' AHL franchise, the Bakersfield Condors.

The announcement was made by Bakersfield and Adrian College Thursday afternoon.

“I’d like to thank president Jeffrey Docking, vice president Frank Hribar, vicepPresident Jim Mahony, athletic director Craig Rainey and the rest of the administration for their support when it comes to my career and Bulldog Hockey,” Krug said in a release. “This has not been an easy decision, to leave Adrian College, as it’s a special place to my family. It’s where I met my wife, Lindsay, and where we’ve raised our three children for the past ten years.”

Krug arrived to Adrian College as a student-athlete as part of the original 2007-08 team under then head coach Ron Fogarty. The Bulldogs were immediately successful and when Fogarty left to be the head coach of Princeton, Krug was named the second head coach.

As a coach, he took Adrian to new heights, winning the school's first NCAA Division III state title in 2022, runners-up in 2023 and a third-straight Frozen Four appearance this past season.

His .800 winning percentage was the highest of all NCAA coaches, regardless of division, and he is Adrian's all-time wins record holder with a record of 229-52-14. The Bulldogs went to the Frozen Four a total of five times in his 10 seasons, won the Peters' Cup as NCHA regular-season champions 10 times and won the Harris Cup as NCHA tournament champions five times.

Krug also had 31 of his players sign professional contracts.

“Telling the players on Tuesday evening was one of the hardest things I’ve had to do,” Krug said in the release. “Outside of my family, those guys are my life. I love them. I’m proud of them. This year’s team is set up to make another run and hopefully add another NCAA trophy to the trophy case inside the Arrington Ice Arena.”

A search for the program's third head coach is underway and with the success the Bulldogs have had under Krug, it shouldn't have a lack of qualified applicants.

“I would like to thank coach Krug for all the hard work and effort he has put into Adrian College and our NCAA men's hockey program,” Rainey said in the release. “It is a bittersweet day at Adrian College as we see one of our best coaches step away for an opportunity in professional hockey. His legacy at Adrian will live here forever. We are happy for coach Krug and his family and wish them the best as they continue their hockey journey. We know there are many more outstanding achievements ahead for him.”
