Advocacy group points out harms of state law restricting abortion

A group of Tennessee physicians affiliated with the health policy advocacy group Protect My Care says the state's restrictive abortion law, triggered by the U.S. Supreme Court decision in Dobbs v. Jackson Womens Health, is harming women.

The doctors spoke out at an event held in Nashville today.

Dr. Amy Gordon Bono, MD, MPH, an internal medicine family physician stated, “Today marks two years since the US Supreme Court handed down the Dobbs decision that overturned Roe v. Wade. That decision took away our freedom and the bodily autonomy of patients and allowed for physicians and now even some non-physician citizens to become healthcare criminals. Our Tennessee politicians continue to make laws that are out of step with the desires of the majority of Tennesseans. We want freedom to decide what is best for our families without fear of government intrusion.”

Dr. Heather Maune, MD, a board-certified Obstetrician/Gynecologist practicing in Nashville, said, “I was born in this state with reproductive rights that have now been stripped away from the patients I treat. I stand here today representing my patients that have been negatively impacted and my colleagues that have been criminally implicated due to Tennessee’s restrictive abortion ban - the most restrictive in the nation.”

Dr. Jill Obremskey, MD, a board-certified pediatrician in Nashville, said, “Each of us should be able to make our own private, medical decisions without government intervention, including our young people. This law essentially forces many pregnant children to have children, and that is just plain wrong, no matter what your feelings are about life.”
