Iowa organization supporting homeless seeing higher demand
DES MOINES, Iowa — The demand for meals for people experiencing homelessness is on the rise at Hope Ministries in Des Moines. Hundreds of people rely on Hope Cafe in Des Moines every day for breakfast, lunch and dinner. Meals are served with care and a dash of optimism by chef Kole Kublick.
National Night Out is Next Week
Next week is the annual National Night Out, celebrating police/community partnerships. The Stuart Police Department invites the community to join them at Lawbaugh Park for a fun night of entertainment and refreshments. Sergeant Katie Guisinger says that everything is free for those interested in attending, and begins at 5pm with the grill being fired up. Other events for the night include face painting, bounce houses, a balloon artist, donut eating contest and raffle. Attendees will also be able to have Tropical Sno. The donut eating contest begins at 6pm, and the raffle will start at 7pm. Festivities take place from 5-8pm.

Panther Seniors Prepare For Final Volleyball Season
With eight seniors ready for their final season as a Panorama Panther volleyball player, seniors Madelyn Carstens, Bridgette Ewing, Cayden Iredale, Kelsey and Miranda Laabs, Madison Mincy, Faith Recker, Hanna Smith and Elizabeth Snyder prepare to lead the Panthers during their final season. Having attended a volleyball camp at Iowa State University, the Panthers now have some scrimmage experience before the season begins. Hoping to put all the pieces in the right places, the Panorama Panthers are less than a month away from action as the Panthers will travel to Urbandale to take on ACGC, Des Moines Christian, Interstate 35, Ogden, Pleasantville, Van Meter, West Central Valley and Woodward-Granger on August 22nd.
Wildcat Seniors Prepare For Final Football Season
Thirteen West Central Valley Wildcat seniors prepare for their final football season as a Wildcat. Seniors Trenton Naragon, Shawn Kent, Jordon Robinson, Tyson Partlow, Wyatt Mangano, Caiden Pote, Austin Pruitt, Jonathan McFadden, Micah Speichenger, Marshall Dickson, Zach Teague, Mason Sloss and Tyler Abbott look to guide the Wildcats beyond the first round in post season action. Last season, the Wildcats went 3-6 and fell 52-7 to the Sigourney Keota Cobras in post season action. With a scrimmage against the Madrid Tigers on August 23rd and the first official game of the season on the 30th, the Wildcats have just over a month to prepare for football action at West Central Valley.

Simpson Top 10 Sports Stories of 2023-24 School Year – #10
The Simpson softball team had their best season in years, finishing with a record of 27-13, and a semifinals appearance in the American Rivers Conference tournament. The Storm got off to a rocky start, going 5-4 in their non-conference matchup before a matchup with one of the best teams in the country in Belhaven. The Storm fell in that game, which was heated on both sides, 5-4, but it brought with it a new sense of confidence for the young squad. After the loss to Belhaven, Simpson went on to win 18-games in a row including a 6-0 start in conference. Head coach Brent Matthias said that loss led to a culture shift in the program, where the team meant more than the individual and they all have each other’s back.
Teachers train puppies to be permanent therapy dogs in schools
Students within the Perry Community School District in Iowa will have new classmates starting this fall: Kona and Sunshine Shimmer. The two puppies are currently being trained by Perry Middle School teachers to become permanent therapy dogs for the school district. They'll first need to pass a test to get a Canine Good Citizen license. That certification will allow them to be in school hallways permanently.
Spoofhound golf having a busy summer
Incoming and current Maryville Spoofhound Golfers have had a busy summer fine tuning their game. The Spoofhound Golf Camp was July 15-19 at Mozingo. According to Spoofhound Head Coach Brenda Ricks, on most days there were 18 in attendance, including four new freshmen boys and a seventh grader also getting some experience.
