Northland Pioneer College (NPC) has launched the Native American Student Success Program (NASS) to support Native American students. The program will organize events for students, their families, and the community at NPC’s centers in Kayenta, Hopi, and Whiteriver. This spring, NPC is hosting four workshops on student success for all NPC Native American students, their families, and community members interested in higher education. These workshops will also be held in the fall 2024 semester.

The first workshop, “Time Management & Study Skills,” will provide students with note-taking, reading, and test-taking strategies. It will also cover how to email instructors, understand degree plans, and plan for the next semester. The second workshop, “School-work-family balance,” will help students balance their school, work, and family responsibilities.

The third workshop, “NPC College Resources,” will inform students about the resources available at NPC, including the library, the Virtual Student Center, tutoring and writing assistance, and tribal community resources. It will also cover university transfer, resume writing, and interview skills. The final workshop, “Financial Wellness & Literacy,” will educate students about personal finance, budgeting, and financial aid, including how to complete the FAFSA and apply for NPC scholarships.

Tonya Thacker, NPC’s Title III Program Director, said this is the first step towards creating a student mentorship program at NPC’s tribal centers. The goal is to involve students in the process so they can help in future workshops. Attendees will receive items to support their academic success, such as backpacks, notebooks, and planners. Students who complete all workshops will receive a three-credit NPC tuition waiver.

NPC, with four regional campuses and five center locations, serves the residents of Navajo and Apache counties. The college offers academic, career, and technical training and education. NPC supports students’ educational goals with affordable tuition, small class sizes, and professional instructors. For more information, visit www.npc.edu.
